Do You Have a Sacred Space?

Do you have a special place where you meet with God each day? While we’re called to stay in constant communication with Him throughout the day, there’s something uniquely powerful about setting aside dedicated time and place to meet with Jesus.

Here’s a beautiful thought: if you block out time in your day and mark it on your calendar, know that God is already there, waiting to meet with you. Don’t stand Him up!

Finding my own Sacred Space for quiet time with God wasn’t easy. My husband, Mark, gets up earlier than I do and starts his day in his favorite La-z-boy recliner. With his coffee in hand and his Bible or Bible app open, he spends time in prayer and study while the house is still asleep. By the time I’m up, he’s already recharged and ready for the day—and usually tuned into Sports Center!

I can’t focus on the Bible while listening to Sports Center, so I knew I needed a place of my own. The bedroom felt too tempting to fall back asleep, so I decided to create a quiet space in our finished basement. I rearranged the furniture, found a comfy chair (not too comfy!), and now I have my coffee, Bible, Bible app, and journal ready each morning. It’s my Sacred Space to meet with Jesus—and yes, our free-roaming bunnies, Zuma and Beesley, like to join me too!

If you don’t yet have a dedicated place for your intentional quiet time, don’t worry. Let’s explore how you can find or create your very own Sacred Space.

Finding a space to meet with God daily can transform your devotional time into a consistent, meaningful habit. If you’re still searching for your perfect Sacred Space, here are some steps to help you create one:

  1. Choose a Space That Fits Your Life
    • Look for a spot where you can be alone and minimize distractions.
    • Consider the early morning kitchen table, a cozy corner of the living room, a backyard patio, or even a repurposed nook in your home.
    • If privacy is tricky in a busy house, noise-canceling headphones and a small table by a window can work wonders. Worst case scenario – hop in your car for a quiet, distraction-free spot!
  2. Make It Comfortable but Purposeful
    • Use a chair or cushion that encourages alertness. You don’t want to feel too cozy and accidentally nap!
    • Add small touches to make it feel special: a soft blanket or even a plant to bring life to the space. I love the idea of lighting a candle as you begin your time with Jesus—a beautiful symbol of His presence and the start of your devotion, gently extinguished when your time together concludes.
  3. Bring the Essentials
    • Keep your Bible, a journal, and pens nearby. You might also like to use a devotional book or an app that guides your study. Our family is loving the Bible app and specifically the Bible Recap plan guiding us through the entire Bible chronologically in one year. We’ve been recommending this plan to everyone we know! I can honestly say I can’t WAIT to meet with God in my Sacred Space each morning to lean in and dive into His Word because of the Bible Recap plan.
    • If coffee or tea helps you focus, bring your favorite mug!
  4. Minimize Distractions
    • Turn off notifications on your phone or leave it in another room (unless you’re using a Bible app).
    • Ask family members to respect your quiet time, explaining how important it is to you.
  5. Set the Atmosphere
    • If you’re like me, I like my Sacred Space to be as quiet as possible. It’s the only way I can concentrate! If you need a little background noise, consider turning on some instrumental worship music or nature sounds. This is your space, so do what works best for you!
    • Adjust the lighting. Natural light is uplifting, but a soft lamp works if it’s early or late (or you’re like me and in a basement!).
  6. Stay Flexible
    • Life happens, and your meeting spot might need to change. A hotel room, car, or even a park bench can serve as a temporary quiet place when needed.

Remember, it’s not about having a picture-perfect setup—it’s about showing up and being present with God. Your space can be simple or creative, as long as it helps you focus on Him.

I hope this has inspired you to create your own Sacred Space. God is waiting for you!
