Thanksgiving Prayer: Bringing the Church to the Table

As we reflect on Thanksgiving, the book of Acts offers a beautiful reminder of what it means to live as the church. Acts 2:46-47 paints a vivid picture of fellowship and faith:

“Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.”

This passage reminds us that the early church wasn’t confined to a building—it was about relationships, shared meals, and genuine hearts united in Christ’s love.

As we gather around our Thanksgiving tables—perhaps with family, friends, or neighbors—there may be a temptation to engage in debates or defend our opinions, (especially in an election year!). But what if, instead, we embraced the spirit of the original church?

What if we came together with glad and sincere hearts, savoring the joy of simply being with those we love? What if carving the turkey became an act of fellowship, and appreciating each other’s quirks and differences brought us closer? When we set aside divisive words and focus on love, we embody the message of Acts 2. We become a living testimony of Christ’s grace and unity, and in doing so, we invite the Lord to multiply His blessings among us. In John 13:35 Jesus says,

“By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”

This Thanksgiving, may we carry the spirit of the church into our gatherings. Let our love be the light that draws others to Him.

Prayer:

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for the gift of fellowship and the reminder from Your Word of what it means to live as Your church. As we gather this Thanksgiving, we lift up each person who will join us. May Your peace and joy fill their hearts, and may we celebrate with gladness, sincerity, and unity. Help us to see each other as You see us, embracing our differences with love and compassion.

Lord, we also pray for those who may not have a family or a place to spend Thanksgiving. Be their comfort, surround them with Your love, and place people in their lives who will share Your light with them. Use us as instruments of Your grace, inviting others into our circles of love and care.

We give thanks for Your many blessings, for the people You’ve placed in our lives, and for the hope we have in Christ. May we honor You in our gatherings, and may our homes reflect the beauty of Your church.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.

    What a beautiful reminder, Susan!

This is a really beautiful example of what it means to be a follower of Christ. His example is written in the Bible and written in our hearts. – Sometimes that message gets muted and all covered up by all the messages that we receive from people and culture and media, etc.

Your bolded words rise to the top. I read over your message once and then read it again just the bolded words. What encouragement what truth what resonance!

I am so thankful for you and your message.

From this purple chair to yours with much gratitude, love, joy, peace, and great Hope!
